5 Questions With South Regional Baseball Coach of the Year David Ernst
Fresh off being named South Regional Baseball Coach of the Year, David Ernst shared some thoughts on food, football, coaching influences, and some of his favorite memories.
1. What is your favorite comfort food?
"I love the hibachi steak at a place called Japan Inn."
2. If you could see one team win a final championship for the rest of your life, would you choose Joe Burrow and the Bengals or Ohio State football?
"I love Joe Burrow, but my favorite team to watch has always been Ohio State Buckeyes football. I can watch them win every year, so I would have to say the Buckeyes ."
3. Who are some of your coaching mentors?
"Former head UFTL baseball coach Billy Glessner gave me my first coaching job, and he has been like a big brother to me. He taught me all aspects of coaching, and I learned so much about the game just being around him for a few years.
"Also, Nick Saban. His attention to detail—not just during games, but in practice, the weight room, and off the field—has always stood out to me. He was a hard-nosed coach who really cared about his players, and I love listening to him speak about football and life."
4. What is your favorite win as a coach?
"Probably my first win. We beat Savannah State 17-2. Another favorite was beating Toccoa Falls 6-3 in the World Series."
5. What is your favorite childhood memory?
"When I was a young kid, we would wake up on Christmas morning, open presents with the family, and then head to Chicago to be with my aunt, uncle, and cousins. We would spend a few days there eating great food and playing football outside in the cold. It was the best time. The memories of being around the whole family as a kid will stay with me forever."
