Damon Cogdell with his Role Model... His Mom

5 Questions With Damon Cogdell

By Monte Perez

1) What has been your favorite vacation spot?

Coach Cogdell:

"We took the family to Jamaica and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere, the friendly people, and the food were all amazing. Experiencing a different culture and way of life was incredible. We would definitely go back."

2) Who is your favorite athlete of all time?

Coach Cogdell:

"I used to say Michael Jordan, but I feel he hasn't done enough for marginalized communities. My new favorite athlete is Shaquille O'Neal. Since leaving the game, Shaq has shown an incredible work ethic. He's always working and giving back to communities. What you see is what you get with Shaq—he's authentic and genuine. He was also one of the most physically dominant players to ever play the game."

3) Who is your non-athletic role model?

Coach Cogdell:

"This is an easy one—my mom. Watching her from my childhood through young adulthood, and now, she is an incredible woman. I am amazed by her intelligence, passion, mental toughness, and strength. If I had to describe her in one sentence, it would simply be: 'Wow.'"

4) What is your favorite comfort food after a big win?

Coach Cogdell:

"Chinese food—chicken and broccoli with fried rice."

5) What has been your most satisfying coaching moment, and who is the best player you've ever played against?

Coach Cogdell:

"One of my most satisfying coaching moments was beating St. Thomas  two years in a row when I was the head coach at Miramar High School.

The best player I ever played against was Randy Moss. We beat Marshall, but by watching film and being on the field with him, you could tell he was destined to be a great NFL player."
